Artificial Intelligence has the capability to notify doctors of potential patient deterioration.

Study Shows AI Alerts Improve Patient Care and Outcomes in Clinical Settings

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the healthcare industry, with a recent study from Mount Sinai demonstrating the significant impact AI-generated alerts can have on patient care and outcomes.

The study, led by Dr. Matthew A. Levin, Director of Clinical Data Science at Mount Sinai Hospital, showed that patients who received real-time AI alerts were 43% more likely to have their care escalated and were less likely to die compared to those who did not receive alerts. These alerts, which signaled adverse changes in patients’ health, enabled timely interventions and improved outcomes.

Dr. Levin explained, “Automated machine learning algorithm scores that trigger evaluation by the provider can outperform older manual methods in predicting clinical deterioration. This allows for earlier intervention, potentially saving more lives.”

The study, involving 2,740 adult patients admitted to four medical-surgical units at Mount Sinai Hospital, divided patients into two groups: one receiving real-time AI alerts and the other not. The results showed that patients who received alerts were more likely to receive necessary medications and were less likely to die within 30 days.

Senior study author David L. Reich emphasized the importance of AI in clinical decision-making, stating, “These models are accurate and timely aids that help us bring the right team to the right patient at the right time. This is a key step towards becoming a learning health system.”

Despite the study being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AI algorithm has been deployed in all stepdown units at Mount Sinai Hospital. This marks a significant advancement in integrating AI in healthcare and improving patient care.

As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in healthcare is expected to expand, leading to more efficient, effective, and patient-centric care. The continuous improvement of AI algorithms will result in more accurate predictions and tailored treatments, ultimately transforming healthcare and improving overall health and well-being.

The study, published in Critical Care Medicine, highlights the potential of AI in enhancing patient outcomes and paving the way for innovative solutions in the future. Subscribe to our newsletter for more engaging articles and stay updated on the latest advancements in healthcare.
