Music Industry Giants Sue AI Music Start-Ups for Copyright Infringement

The music recording industry is taking a stand against two fast-growing artificial intelligence music start-ups, Suno and Uncharted Labs, for allegedly using copyrighted songs to train their AI tools. Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Records are among the record companies that have filed lawsuits against these companies, claiming that they are exploiting artists’ work without consent or compensation.

Generative AI tools like those developed by Suno and Udio rely on ingesting large amounts of human-created content to generate new outputs. However, the record companies argue that these companies used songs they did not have the rights to when training their algorithms.

In response, Suno’s CEO, Mikey Shulman, defended their technology, stating that it is designed to create entirely new content rather than replicate existing material. He criticized the record companies for resorting to legal action instead of engaging in a constructive dialogue.
