Highlights from the 5th International Conference on Smart Sensors and Application 2024
The 5th International Conference on Smart Sensors and Application 2024 (ICSSA 2024) recently took place at the St. Giles Wembley Hotel in Penang, Malaysia, from 10-12 September 2024. This conference, organized by the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) Malaysia Chapter, brought together a diverse group of academics, researchers, industry professionals, and students.
The primary goal of ICSSA 2024 was to facilitate collaboration between academia and industry to drive research and development in smart sensors and their applications. The event provided a platform for participants to present their work, exchange ideas, and explore emerging technologies in the field.
The conference featured two distinguished keynote speakers, Prof. Ir. Dr. Nor Ashidi from USM and Prof. Dr. Mohsen Guizani from Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in the UAE. Prof. Ashidi discussed the potential of You Only Look Once (YOLO) Networks for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Component and Defect Detection, while Prof. Guizani shared insights on Machine Learning Wireless Network Applications in Smart Cities.
ICSSA 2024 received a total of 68 paper submissions from countries around the world, with 38 papers accepted for presentation. These papers are being considered for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, ensuring broad dissemination and recognition of the research.
The conference also featured an Industry Highlight by Ventura IoT Sdn. Bhd., showcasing advancements in smart sensors in the oil & gas industry, as well as an invited speaker session on AI-driven pose estimation in healthcare. The event included an Industry Forum and workshops on Embedded AI and the ethics of using AI tools like ChatGPT in thesis writing.
The success of ICSSA 2024 was attributed to the efforts of the conference committee, advisors, speakers, industry panels, and reviewers, as well as the support of sponsors such as Ventura IoT Sdn. Bhd., CAIRO, Pacton Technologies Sdn. Bhd., Sari Muhibbah Engineering Sdn. Bhd., and iFIBER Sdn. Bhd.

The conference was a valuable experience for all involved, highlighting the importance of continued research and innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
