Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., and Army Gen. Laura J. Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command, highlighted the importance of leveraging artificial intelligence and advancing the space domain to address future security challenges at the South American Defense Conference in Santiago, Chile.

The theme of this year’s conference, “How We Can Leverage New Technologies for the Defense of Hemispheric Sovereignty,” set the stage for discussions on the role of AI in national security. Brown emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation to harness the full potential of AI, outlining seven key challenges that must be addressed to turn AI from a concept into a tangible capability.

Richardson, on the other hand, focused on Enhanced Domain Awareness and the adoption of a Common Space Operating Picture, initiatives aimed at improving synchronization of operations and gaining a deeper understanding of the space operational environment. Both leaders expressed confidence in allied and partner nations’ ability to work together across boundaries and domains for a better future.

The conference, hosted by U.S. Southern Command, brought together representatives from 10 South American nations, North America, Europe, and the Inter-American Defense Board, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing complex security challenges. With a shared commitment to democracy and unity, the leaders called for collective action to ensure a positive future for the Western Hemisphere.
