UD Faculty and Staff Explore Cutting-Edge AI in Education

The University of Delaware is at the forefront of exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and education through the establishment of a Working Group facilitated by a dynamic and interdisciplinary team of faculty and staff. This group includes individuals such as Erin Sicuranza, director of UD’s Academic Technology Services, and Joshua Wilson, associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development.

Wilson, with a background in special education, is studying how automated essay evaluation systems and other forms of machine learning can support student learning. Together with colleagues from various departments, Wilson is using AI to develop new instructional approaches for large foundational courses to enhance student engagement and connection to the material.

UD’s Library, Museums and Press has also developed an AI literacy tutorial to facilitate conversations about the appropriate use of AI among students and faculty. Additionally, Academic Technology Services is working on the UD Study AiDE project, which aims to create a suite of learning tools for students to generate their own study materials using AI technology.

The Working Group has established a seminar series titled “Navigating the Future of AI and Teaching and Learning in Higher Education” to help faculty and staff understand the implications of AI for education. The group is also collaborating with UD’s Data Science Institute and Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence to support AI research and graduate study programs.
