Expert Identifies Government’s Lack of Strategy

Armenia’s Ranking in Global AI Index and the Need for Strategic Policy

Armenia’s Ranking in Global AI Index Sparks Debate on State Strategy

Armenia has been ranked 54th in the recent Global AI Index, shedding light on the country’s artificial intelligence capacities in comparison to sixty-two other nations. The Index, published by the Tortoise media platform in June, is a comprehensive assessment based on 111 indicators gathered from various public and private data sources as well as governments.

Commenting on Armenia’s ranking, Hrant Khachatryan, Director of the YerevaNN research lab, pointed out a lack of strategic policy at the state level. Khachatryan highlighted the need for a clear direction in the AI sector, criticizing the broad scope of priorities outlined in a draft document that has yet to be approved by the government.

YerevaNN lab, known for its focus on machine learning research, is spearheading an initiative to establish an artificial intelligence research institute in Armenia. This move comes as Armenia struggles with its ranking in government strategy (61st) and AI research and infrastructure (59th and 50th respectively).

Despite these challenges, Armenia has shown promise in the talent category, ranking 35th in AI talent. Khachatryan emphasized the importance of focusing efforts on creating AI models in life sciences, citing a potential for competitiveness in fields such as biology, chemistry, and pharmacy.

However, Khachatryan also highlighted a communication gap between the scientific community and the government in Armenia, stressing the need for more collaboration to drive progress in the AI sector. He called for the development of more AI specialists and groups within the country to bolster the local AI ecosystem.

As Armenia navigates its position in the global AI landscape, the call for a cohesive state strategy and increased collaboration between stakeholders remains crucial for the country to harness its potential in artificial intelligence.
