Sora's Android launch has started successfully. On its first day on the Google Play Store, the AI video app from ChatGPT developer OpenAI was downloaded about 470,000 times in markets where it was available, according to new estimates from app analytics provider. Applications.
This makes the Android launch more than four times larger than the iOS launch and yields 327% more installs (360,000) – but the company notes that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
On iOS, Sora was only available in the US and Canada and was invite-only.
However, Sora for Android is available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam and OpenAI has waived the invitation requirement at the end of October for its most important markets.
The app became a hit upon its debut, despite its previous exclusive status. The iOS app achieved over a million installs within its first week and quickly shot to the top of the App Store. Today, it still ranks 4th on the list of best free iPhone apps in the US App Store.
With Sora, users use artificial intelligence to create videos using suggestions. These videos can also feature users and their friends animated by artificial intelligence through a feature known as Cameos. Videos can be scrolled in a TikTok-like vertical format, so you can see what others are doing with the technology.
Appfigures also revised its previous estimates for Sora's first-day iOS app downloads. Originally, models claimed the app was downloaded around 56,000 times on its first day. Now that more time has passed, the model can more accurately predict that the number was closer to 110,000, with about 69,300 of those being U.S. installations.
By comparison, the Sora app for Android saw about 296,000 installs in the U.S. out of a total of 470,000, indicating that interest in the AI video creator still exists even after the initial buzz around the iOS launch has died down.
Sora also competes with Meta AI, which today made its mobile app available to users in Europe after previously debuting in the US.
