Google now allows users to switch from AI overviews to AI conversations

Google is giving users the ability to ask follow-up questions directly in AI Reviews, which are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results. Now users will be able to jump into conversations with AI Mode, Google's conversational search feature for complex questions.

The tech giant also announced that it is making Gemini 3 the new default model for AI reviews around the world. The company said in a blog post that this update will provide users with “best-in-class AI response directly on the search results page.”

Tuesday's announcements demonstrate Google's ongoing efforts to make its search engine less of a static search tool and more of an interactive, artificial intelligence-powered tool.

“People use search to ask an extremely wide range of questions – sometimes to quickly find information, such as sports scores or weather, where a simple result will suffice,” Robby Stein, vice president of products at Google Search, said in a blog post. “But for complex questions or tasks that require deep dive into a topic, you should be able to seamlessly benefit from powerful AI-powered conversation.”

Google says its tests show that users prefer experiences that flow naturally into conversation, and that asking follow-up questions while retaining context from AI reviews makes the search engine more helpful.

The new experience is designed to resemble a single flow, with links allowing users to move from a quick snapshot to a deeper conversation when needed, the tech giant says.

The updates come days after Google announced it was bringing “Personal Intelligence” to AI mode, allowing it to use Gmail and Google Photos to provide more personalized responses. The company debuted the Gemini app earlier this month to enable its AI assistant to customize responses by connecting to the entire Google ecosystem, starting with Gmail, Photos, search and YouTube history.

Google also recently introduced AI Reviews to Gmail, allowing users to search their inboxes using natural language for quick replies rather than relying on traditional keyword searches and opening multiple emails to find specific information. The company made the announcement alongside the debut of its new AI inbox.
