ChatGPT voice mode is no longer a separate interface

ChatGPT voice mode is becoming more and more useful. OpenAI announced on Tuesday is updating the user interface of its popular AI chatbot so that users can access ChatGPT Voice directly in the chat, rather than having to switch to a separate mode.

This means that during a conversation, you will be able to talk to the chatbot and view its responses, including shared images, for example. Previously, you were taken to a separate screen where you interacted with an animated blue circle that represented the ChatGPT voice interface. This screen also had a mute button and an option to record live video, as well as an X to return to the default text mode.

During these earlier conversations, you could only listen to what ChatGPT was saying rather than seeing it on the screen. This can be annoying if you don't get a response, as you'll have to exit the separate voice mode to see the text response.

Now the company says you can chat and watch your replies appear as ChatGPT answers your questions. You can also review previous messages and view visuals during conversations, such as images or maps, in real time.

The change will make interacting with your AI chatbot more natural as you will be able to more easily switch between speech and text in the same conversation; however, you will still need to click “end” to stop the voice call when you are ready to return to text mode.

This improved voice mode is the new default mode and is now rolling out to all web and mobile app users.

OpenAI says those who prefer a separate voice mode can still revert to the original mode under “Voice Mode” in “Settings.” Here they will see a new option to enable “Separate Mode”.
