Cloud Security Alliance Releases Framework for Managing Risks of Artificial Intelligence Models

Importance of Model Risk Management (MRM) for Harnessing AI and Machine Learning Models: CSA Guidance Paper

The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) has released a new paper emphasizing the importance of Model Risk Management (MRM) in harnessing the full potential of AI and machine learning (ML) models. The paper, titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Model Risk Management Framework,” highlights the risks associated with AI models, such as data biases and factual inaccuracies, and stresses the need for a proactive approach to ensure a comprehensive MRM framework.

According to Vani Mittal, a lead author of the paper, the increasing reliance on AI/ML models brings both promise and risks. Mitigating these risks requires a proactive approach outlined in the paper. The framework explores the four pillars of an effective MRM framework – model cards, data sheets, risk cards, and scenario planning – to create a holistic approach to MRM.

By implementing this framework, organizations can benefit from enhanced transparency, proactive risk mitigation, informed decision-making, and trust-building with stakeholders and regulators. Caleb Sima, Chair of the CSA AI Safety Initiative, emphasizes that a comprehensive framework is essential for responsible development and the safe use of AI/ML models.

For those interested in learning more about the people-centric aspects of MRM, CSA recommends reading their paper on AI Organizational Responsibilities. The AI Model Risk Management Framework is available for download on the CSA website.
