The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the world's population and is poised for enormous growth. The Singapore government's ambitious and forward-thinking approach – exemplified by the National AI 2.0 Strategy and Smart Nation 2.0 and openness to global talent – make it the perfect location to expand our presence with the opening of the new Google DeepMind research laboratory in Singapore.
This investment builds on Google's long-standing commitment to the Asia-Pacific ecosystem and follows Google's DeepMind team in Asia-Pacific more than doubling in size over the past year.
Progress on Gemini and the pioneering impact of artificial intelligence
Our growing team in Singapore will consist of exceptional scientists, software engineers and AI impact experts focused on key areas of research and development. This builds on our efforts to pioneer basic research on linguistic and cultural inclusion in the Asia-Pacific region, advancing Gemini's core capabilities and applying the latest models across Google services and Cloud customers.
Our new research lab will be geared to work directly with government, businesses, civil society and world-class academic institutions across the region. We are focused on understanding how our technologies can best be developed to serve the diverse needs of the Asia-Pacific region.
Building on a foundation of positive influence
We're already seeing the hugely positive impact our teams and partners are making by using Google technologies in Singapore and across the region. Beyond our core products like Gemini, we see creative and exciting examples of our AI technology in action when used collaboratively and responsibly:
- In science: A multidisciplinary research team from the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) used AlphaFold to pioneer a breakthrough in the understanding of Parkinson's disease, establishing a link between immunology and neurodegenerative diseases, which could lead to earlier diagnosis and targeted therapies.
- In public services: We work closely with GovTech, the Cyber ​​Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). We launched together AI agent sandbox safe testing of autonomous solutions that increase the efficiency of the public sector and the provision of services.
- Regarding multilingualism: We collaborated with AI Singapore for the launch Aquarium Projectopen data platform for Southeast Asian languages. We have also expanded our partnership to support further development LWMORSKY – a family of LLMs trained and tuned to represent the cultural contexts and linguistic nuances of Southeast Asia. This enabled the launch of their first multimodal model, SEA-LION v4built on the multimodal capabilities of Gemma 3.
- In education: We provide students in Singapore one year free access to the Google AI Pro plan to unlock enhanced AI features that support creativity and learning, and we have introduced Gemini Academy to IMDA's Singapore Digital Office to expand knowledge of AI and ensure access to AI for all.
- With startups: Through ours Google for Startups: AI First acceleratorwe support Singaporean AI startups that use generative AI to solve important economic, social and environmental problems.
