Google has significantly reduced its AI outcomes following a highly embarrassing launch.

Google’s AI Overviews Making Bad Mistakes, Company Working on Fixes

Google’s latest feature, AI Overviews, has been making some bad mistakes since its launch, with the AI-generated search summaries spitting out nonsensical and incorrect answers to search queries. In response to this, the tech giant is working on a series of fixes and implementing guard rails to prevent further errors.

According to a recent study from SEO company BrightEdge, the AI Overviews summaries were showing up in response to 84 percent of queries before the changes. However, this figure has now dropped significantly to only 15 percent of queries, indicating a temporary retreat from the technology.

Founder of Search Engine Roundtable, Barry Schwartz, commented on the situation, stating that the reduction in AI results could also be attributed to the cost of running these features and their impact on Google Ads revenue.

Future Plans for AI Overviews

The research suggests that AI Overviews are more likely to appear when search queries are phrased as questions, and they are particularly prevalent for healthcare-related keywords. Despite the current decrease in AI results, SEO expert Lily Ray believes that Google will continue to improve the product and increase its usage over time.

As Google works on refining the parameters of AI Overviews, users can expect more changes and potential bumps along the road. However, the question remains whether we will see more outlandish mistakes like the infamous suggestion of putting glue on pizza, which highlighted the flaws in Google’s AI technology.

Only time will tell how Google’s AI Overviews will evolve in the future.
