Google Photos' newest feature lets you create memes yourself

Google Photos now lets you create memes with your own images. Google on Thursday introduced a new AI-powered generative feature called “Me Meme” that will allow you to combine a photo template and your own image to generate a meme image.

This new feature, which will be available first to US users, was initially available spotted in development last October via the Android Authority blog. It was formal announced posted by Google on Thursday via the Photos community site.

According to Google, this feature is experimental, so the generated images “may not perfectly match the original photo.” He suggests uploading well-lit, sharp and forward-facing photos for best results.

The add-on is simply intended to be an interesting way to browse photos and experiment with Google Gemini AI technology, especially Nano Banana. Google's popular AI Images model supports other AI features in the Google Photos app, such as the ability to recreate images in new styles such as cartoons and paintings.

While it's a pretty frivolous addition all things considered, features like this help remind users to return to the Photos app whenever they want to play around with the AI tools rather than using a competitor's product.

Additionally, users are gravitating towards features that come with AI editions, as OpenAI discovered after successfully launching its Sora app, which allows you to create AI videos in which you can feature yourself and your friends.

The “Me Meme” feature hasn't been fully rolled out yet, so it may not be visible in the updated Google Photos app yet. If available, it will appear in the “Create” tab, Google says. A Google representative told TechCrunch that the feature will reach iOS and Android users in the U.S. in the “coming weeks.”

To use this feature, select a template or upload your own, then click “add photo” and “Generate”. Google notes that more templates will be added over time. Once the AI creates the image, you can save the photo, share it on other platforms, or click “Regenerate” to reimagine the image for a second time.
