Government Initiates Regulations for Artificial Intelligence Development and Semiconductor Manufacturing in India

The Indian government is taking proactive steps to regulate and promote the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the country. According to a top government official, the process of preparing regulations for AI is underway to foster innovation and protection in this emerging field.

In addition to AI regulations, the government is also considering a second version of the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) that will focus on ancillary development for the semiconductor supply ecosystem. This move aims to attract more component makers to India and support the semiconductor industry by addressing various materials and machinery requirements.

Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), S. Krishnan, mentioned that discussions are ongoing within the government about the need for a separate act or incorporating AI regulations into existing laws. The government is looking to adopt a policy similar to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which balances protection with encouraging development and innovation in the AI sector.

At an international conference organized by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Kolkata, officials highlighted the importance of AI data regulation and the potential impact of SPECS 2.0 on the semiconductor industry. Aditya Kr Sinha, Senior Director & Centre Head at C-DAC Kolkata, emphasized the role of technology in improving agricultural practices and environmental sustainability.

During the conference, innovative projects such as the Vision-guided AI-enabled Robotic Apple Harvester and AI-based Air Quality Monitoring System for industries were reviewed. These initiatives aim to leverage electronics and ICT technologies to enhance crop quality, protect the environment, and improve health and safety measures for farmers.
