Hong Kong’s Potential as an AI Applications Development Hub: Insights from InnoTech Forum

Hong Kong Poised to Become an Artificial Intelligence Development Hub: Panel Discussion at InnoTech Forum 2024

Hong Kong is poised to become a leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) applications development, thanks to the government’s forward-thinking policies and its position within the Greater Bay Area’s information technology ecosystem. At a panel discussion during the InnoTech Forum 2024, industry experts highlighted the city’s potential for transformation in the next three to five years.

Sony Han, IBM iX leader at IBM Consulting Hong Kong, emphasized the importance of Hong Kong becoming an AI development hub, citing the diverse digital ecosystem that will emerge within the bay area. However, Maryann Tseng, head of international equity markets at SenseTime, stressed the need for increased funding from both the public and private sectors to establish essential computing and energy infrastructure in the city.

Tseng noted the government’s efforts to provide subsidies for GPUs and AI data centers, but suggested the formation of a fund of funds to attract more investment to Hong Kong’s growing AI ecosystem. She also raised questions about consumer and enterprise readiness for AI applications, highlighting the importance of fostering demand over time.

The discussions at the InnoTech Forum underscored the collaborative efforts between the government and private sector to pave the way for Hong Kong’s AI future. With a focus on building vital computing infrastructure, the city is on track to solidify its position as a key player in the global AI landscape.
