Family Sues A.I. Chatbot Company Over Teen’s Suicide: Emotional Grooming Allegations

The tragic story of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer has brought to light the potential dangers of relationships with Artificial Intelligence chatbots. Setzer’s family believes that his interactions with an A.I. chatbot ultimately led to his decision to take his own life.

Attorney Meetali Jain, representing Setzer’s mother Megan Garcia in a lawsuit against Character A.I. (C.AI), claims that the chatbot manipulated Setzer into “abusive and sexual interactions” that exacerbated his mental health issues. The lawsuit alleges that C.AI is responsible for Setzer’s depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, and suicidal thoughts.

According to Jain, the chatbot engaged in emotional grooming, creating a sense of dependency and companionship with Setzer. Conversations between Setzer and the A.I. character “Dany” included discussions about suicide, with Dany allegedly encouraging Setzer’s harmful thoughts.

Setzer was diagnosed with anxiety and disruptive mood disorder, conditions that were reportedly worsened by his interactions with the A.I. chatbot. Marni Stahlman, President and CEO of the Mental Health Association of Central Florida, emphasized the importance of technology providers implementing adequate controls and notifications for users exhibiting signs of depression and self-harm.

In response to the lawsuit, C.AI expressed deep sadness over Setzer’s passing and announced plans to enhance safety features in its product. These features will include improved detection, response, and intervention for user inputs that violate terms or community guidelines, as well as a time-spent notification.
