Microsoft’s $3.2 Billion Investment in Sweden to Boost AI Knowledge and Capacity

Microsoft has announced its largest investment in Sweden to date, with plans to invest 33.7 billion kronor ($3.2 billion) over the next two years in cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The tech giant aims to train 250,000 people by 2027 to enhance AI knowledge and competence, as well as increase capacity at its three data centers in the country.

At a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Microsoft’s president and vice chair Brad Smith highlighted the significance of the investment, stating that it would enable Sweden to build world-leading AI data center infrastructure. Smith attributed the company’s ability to make such a substantial investment to Sweden’s forward-looking energy policy and abundant access to green energy sources.

This investment in Sweden is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its AI infrastructure globally. The company has recently announced similar AI investments in countries like France, Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In Sweden, Microsoft plans to provide over 20,000 graphic processing units (GPUs) for training AI models and enhance capacity at its data centers in Sandviken, Gavle, and Staffanstorp.
