Pinterest is experimenting with new AI-powered personalized boards

Pinterest announced on Monday, new AI-powered board updates to make them more personalized for users. These features include the AI-powered Collage “Style for You,” which helps users create outfits based on saved Fashion Pins, and “Boards Made for You,” which are personalized boards created using AI.

Styled for you collages allow users to combine different clothes and accessories to create new outfits tailored to their individual style preferences. By clicking on a collage item, users can browse through saved pins recommended by AI for mixing and matching.

Pinterest is also testing “Boards Made for You,” personalized boards selected based on editorial input and AI-powered suggestions. These boards – featuring trending styles, weekly outfit inspiration and shoppable content – will be featured in users' home feeds and inboxes.

The company is initially experimenting with AI features in the US and Canada. They will begin to be implemented in the next few months.

The company says the goal of these AI features is to transform Pinterest boards from mere organizational tools into a more personalized way to browse, shop and find outfit inspiration. This initiative is in line with Pinterest's goal to position itself as an “AI-enabled shopping assistant,” as the CEO indicated during its second-quarter earnings call. Pinterest has already integrated AI in various ways, including AI-powered recommendations and visual search.

However, while the platform is on the one hand introducing more AI features, on the other hand it is also trying to prevent access to AI-generated content. In April, the company announced its plan to label images generated and modified by artificial intelligence. There are also controls in place that allow users to reduce the number of AI-generated Pins they see in their feeds.

In addition to new experiments with artificial intelligence, there will be new tabs sorting Pins by category, available after browsing boards from user profiles. These updates will roll out globally in the coming months.

One of the new tabs, “Make It Yours”, will recommend fashion and home decor products based on the user's saved Pins. The “More Ideas” tab will suggest related Pins from various categories, such as beauty, recipes, and art. Finally, the “All Saved” tab will allow users to easily find all previously saved Pins.
