Reddit announced Thursday that it is expanding its AI-powered search engine to include five new languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. With this extension, the feature is now available in countries such as Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico and Italy.
Users who have set one of these languages as their default instead of English can now chat with the AI in a question and answer format. Reddit uses the Google AI model to power this feature.
Reddit first launched its AI-powered search engine last year and is working to expand it in a variety of ways. This feature is part of Reddit Answers, which works alongside the platform's traditional search.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said in August that Reddit's search engine has more than 70 million weekly users and more than 6 million people use Reddit Answers. He also discussed plans to standardize search during the company's quarterly earnings call.
Question-and-answer style search and chat interfaces have been gaining popularity since the integrated ChatGPT web search engine. Existing search engines such as Google and Brave have introduced similar features to increase user engagement and retention. Newer startups like Perplexity have also gained traction with chat-based search interfaces.
