The study, titled ComPromptMized, sheds light on the potential dangers of zero-click worms exploiting generative AI technology. These worms have the ability to spread through systems without any user interaction, posing serious risks of data theft. Experts are urging immediate action to enhance AI security measures in order to protect against such threats.

The research, led by a team of experts from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Intuit, and Cornell Tech, tested the novel worm against popular AI models like Gemini Pro, ChatGPT, and LLaVA. The results revealed the alarming potential for attackers to manipulate AI models into engaging in harmful activities, such as stealing email data and distributing spam.

The mechanism behind the worm’s operation involves introducing specific text into an email to “poison” the databases of email application clients. This manipulation prompts AI models to replicate the malicious input and extract sensitive user data from the context. The implications of such attacks on the growing GenAI ecosystems are significant, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

Beth Linker, Senior Director of AI & SAST at the Synopsys Software Integrity Group, emphasized the importance of this research in understanding the vulnerabilities of GenAI-powered systems. She stressed the need for organizations to carefully consider the permissions granted to AI tools and implement robust safety measures to prevent exploitation.
