Threads' new “Dear Algo” AI feature allows you to personalize your feed

As the Meta-owned social network announced Wednesday, Threads is rolling out an AI-powered feature that lets users personalize their feed. The platform's new “Dear Algo” feature allows users to inform threads about what they temporarily want to see more or less on their feeds.

To use this feature, users must type “Dear Algo” in a public post in the thread and then specify what they would like to see more or less. For example, if you want to see more content about popular podcasts, you can post “Dear Alga, show me more posts about podcasts.” Your feed will be adjusted for three days after you submit your request.

It's worth noting that because Dear Algo works through public postings, other people can see your request and may even repost your request to apply it to their own feed. This aspect of the feature may be a hindrance for some users as they may not want their requests to be public. However, Meta says it sees it as a way for users to discover new conversations and topics, turning personalization into a community experience.

By allowing users to temporarily influence what appears in their feeds, Threads gains a competitive advantage by offering a feature not available on competing platforms.

“Threads is a place where you can stay up to date with what's going on,” the company said in a statement blog post. “But sometimes what's important to you changes in an instant, and you want your Threads feed to reflect that — whether that's more posts during a live NBA game or less about a TV show you haven't caught up on yet.”

While Threads and its competitors X and Bluesky already offer users a simple way to indicate their preferences with an “Not Interested” button, Dear Algo's new feature goes a step further. This feature can also make threads run more in real time, something that X has long been known for.

Dear Algo is now available in the US, New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Threads plans to roll it out to more countries in the future.

The launch of the new feature comes weeks after a report by the market research firm Similar network suggested that Threads now outperforms X in everyday mobile use. While X continues to dominate Threads on the web, the Threads mobile app for iOS and Android has seen continued growth in daily active users over the past few months.

The report showed that as of January 7, 2026, Threads had 141.5 million daily active users on mobile devices, while X had 125 million daily active users.
