UTM Establishes First Faculty of Artificial Intelligence in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has made history by establishing the first Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) in the country, with a focus on instilling human values in its graduates to ensure ethical use of AI technology.

The vice-chancellor of UTM, Profesor Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, emphasized the importance of incorporating ethical values in the development and management of AI technology to prevent misuse.

To further enhance the curriculum and expertise in human values, FAI has appointed AI futurist Zack Kass as an Adjunct Professor. The faculty has received an initial allocation of RM20 million to support its initiatives.

“Ethical values are crucial in the use of technology to avoid potential problems for the country,” said Profesor Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail during a press conference at UTM Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to establishing FAI, UTM has been tasked with leading the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium, a research program that brings together public universities and key industries to drive technological advancements in various sectors such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, energy, climate change, and economy.

Through collaborations with other universities, UTM aims to develop AI technology for the betterment of society and the country’s economy. The consortium will also play a vital role in producing skilled AI talents to meet the demands of the market.

With the establishment of FAI and the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Consortium, UTM is paving the way for ethical and innovative advancements in AI technology, setting a new standard for education and research in Malaysia.
